American Made & Sangam

(two short films in English)

Private screenings in Naperville (10am), Desplaines (2am), & Downers Grove (5pm)

American Made (directed by Sharat Raju)

A single scene drama in which a bearded turban-wearing Sikh gentleman, his beautiful wife, and two sons are stranded in an Arizona desert after their GM station wagon overheats and breaks down. Will anyone stop to help the family at the sight of the father’s turban, especially after 9/11? Are there conflicts within the family that arise from the degrees of assimilation into American society?

Sangam (directed by Prashant Bhargava)

Inspired by the pilgrimage site in India, Sangam is a film about the struggle to maintain faith in the reality of the American Dream. As each longs for what the other takes for granted, a recent immigrant from Bihar, India, and a disillusioned Indian-American cross paths on a New York subway train where they must confront the currents that bind and divide them.

The two directors, Sharat Raju & Prashant Bhargava, will be available for a Q&A dialogue after each screening.

*Mr. Rajendra Singh has engaged in rural development with environment care and protection for the last 15 years. Through his determination, vision, hard work and dedication, he has transformed the life of people in 750 villages of Aravali hills, India. He has turned the arid land cultivable, densely afforested large tracts, making wild life sanctuary by water management and made the dry rivers flow throughout the year. Aquatic life and bird sanctuary have flourished;animal life has become lively, with desert land beaming with life all year around. For his contribution to conservation and rational use of water resources in poor farming communities in arid regions of northern India, he was awarded 2001 Ramon Magsaysay Award.

**Often regarded as the Nobel Prizes of Asia, Ramon Magsaysay Awards were established by the trustees of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund (RBF) based in New York City. Conceived by John D. Rockefeller III, the prizes were created to commemorate the late President of the Philippines, and to perpetuate his example of integrity in government and pragmatic idealism within a democratic society. The awards honor individuals and organizations in Asia whose civic contributions and leadership "exemplify the greatness of spirit, integrity, and devotion to freedom of Ramon Magsaysay," former president of the Philippines who died tragically in an airplane crash . These awards are presented in five categories: government service, public service, community leadership, international understanding and journalism, literature and creative communication arts. Up to five awards of $50,000 each are given annually by the board of trustees of the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation, which is head quarte! red in Manila and receives its principal support from the RBF.

Hari Bhari

(Hindi with English subtitles)

directed by Shyam Benegal

Starring Shabana Azmi, Nandita Das, Rajeshwari Sachdev

at the Oak Brook Theaters #5-7 (opposite Maggiano's Restaurant)

'Hari-Bhari' is the story of five women of a Shaikh Muslim Landholding family who live in a 'Qasba' which is in a semi rural area of Badayun District, western Uttar Pradesh.
The frame story deals with three generations of women : grandmother, her two daughters - in - law, and a grand - daughter. Within the frame story are individual episodes dealing with the various crises faced by each of them.
The film concerns itself with the need for women to develop an awareness of female health problems and their rights over their own bodies as necessary factor in their empowerment. Although the film is fictional saga of a family, it is based on actual case studies made over a period of time in the region where the film is located.
Hasina is an ailing matriach in a joint family which is run by her older son Khaleel Ahmed and his perpetually pregnant wife Najma. Najma has two young sons with a history of miscarriages and children having died in infancy. Hasina's second son Khurshid works in Meerut but his conservative wife Afsana and her two young sons and an infant daughter live in the same house. Hasina's daughter Ghazala comes to stay with her after being driven out by her husband Munir who blames her for not giving him a son. Her teenage daughter Salma shuttles between her father's and her grandmother Hasina's house depending on Munir's erratic moods. The bittersweet events taking place in the house during the course of several months constitutes the story of the film.

Dance Like A Man

Mahesh Dattani's Award Winning Play (in English)

at the Northlight Theater, Skokie

Starring: Lilette Dubey, Vijay Krisna, Joy Sengupta, Suchitra Pillai

(pictures)

"Dance Like A Man" is a powerful human drama providing an insight into contemporary social scene in India. The story of Jairaj and Ratna, two dancers past their prime is juxtaposed with that of their daughter Lata, to reveal darker secrets of family relationships and conflicts between generations. The mode is comic but the concerns are serious, real and Universal!

Dattani has written the play with impressive skills, sketching the characters and the relationships with remarkable sensitivity. The tightly woven plot moves to and fro between the past and the present, never leaving a dull moment! The dialogue too is crisp and richly imbued with dramatic energy. The abundance of wit, irony and humor keeps the audience laughing almost throughout the play. The brilliance of Dattani's script is fully matched by the visually elegant set design and clever use of stage space and lighting. Excellent performance by the cast makes this a truly memorable experience.

Bhopal Express

directed by Mahesh Mathai

at the Oak Brook Theaters (#5-7)

The derelict Union Carbide pesticide factory in Bhopal looks like any other abandoned factory. Rust has set in and creepers are growing over the machinery. The only sign of life is perhaps a bored watchman who isn't sure what exactly his duty is. Apart from the angry graffiti scrawled on the walls, there is no visible link between this rotting structure and the worst industrial disaster in history. One that has take the lives of over 16,000 children, women, and men and maimed over 500,00 people. And the disaster is far from over. After 15 years, its shadow still haunts the city.

Selected for 2000 Berlin Film Festival, "Bhopal Express" is a human drama through the eyes of a newly-wed couple (Kay Kay & Netra Nethra Raghuraman) whose life takes a serious turn when the tragedy strikes, and through the eyes of their friend (Naseeruddin Shah), a larger-than-life character in the drama. But the larger purpose of the film is to take a close look at the thoughtless and irresponsible administration behind the tragedy and its effect on common people.

India Development Service (IDS) invites to experience the tragedy which would either shut your minds off the truth, or you'll come out jolted and annoyed.

Mr. Naseeruddin Shah will be present after the screening for discussion.
